Abstract:
· This project is intended to assist teachers, families and students to make connections between mathematical concepts and the real life context in rural and remote schools and assist students in the named rural and remote schools to achieve improved educational outcomes in Mathematics.
· The Education Officer will provide professional learning to teachers to guide the choosing of appropriate games for students. “To ensure there is scope for mathematical learning, games need to be carefully selected and adapted to suit the needs of individual children. ”
· Teachers will choose games to meet specific student objectives. For example, the Kinder/Prep teachers may chooses games focussed on developing the principles of counting, which is a key understanding at that level. Year Five teachers may choose games that focus on the development of understanding decimal number.
· Because of the time it takes to collate family maths packs, each school will employ a teacher assistant for 40 hours to collate maths games from the listed resources for all classes in their school. Due to the geographical isolation of each school, schools will be responsible for employing their own teacher assistant. Teacher assistants will be required to collate resources, such as playing cards, counters and dice, photocopy game boards on to card, and laminate and put the games with clearly printed instructions into back packs A minimum of 3 family maths packs per class will be made.
· Families will be invited to attend a family maths night as a familiarisation time. Games will be placed in backpacks and sent home on a rotational basis for family involvement. The backpack will include rationale and clearly articulated instructions for the game in plain English.
